Christina Prieser, Associate Partner at HPC moderated the forum which delivered an unsettling message that potential disruption through malicious cyber attacks on ports’ IT infrastructures will only increase in the future. Among the experts contributing, Scott Dickerson the founder of CISO LLC, which develops bespoke security programs for the maritime industry predicted, “We focus too much on legal regulations instead of fighting the perpetrators. This will lead to further disruptions to supply chains in the coming years. He went on to focus on contingency planning to combat the risks. Key to this is to foster a culture of security awareness throughout the organization.

Marlink released the latest global maritime cyber threat report produced by its Security Operations Center (SOC). Based on data gathered from 1,800 actively monitoried vessels during the first half of 2024, the report shows changing tactics of cyber criminals, as well as the fact that malicious activity in the first six months increased significantly compared to the previous year. SOC analysts observed a continued rise in common threats such as Command and Control attacks, along with the evolution of botnet attacks, which are growing in both complexity and volume.
Marlink reports that it has acquired 100% of Port-IT, a maritime cyber security systems provider. The acquisition of Port-IT follows on from the recent acquisition of another cyber security firm, Diverto, and is expected to be complementary in expanding the managed cyber services capabilities of the Marlink Group.
Cybersecurity's role in geopolitics is growing more significant by the day. In a world of increasingly sophisticated cyber threats, governments worldwide are recognizing the impact digital attacks can have on national security, trade, and infrastructure. This has never been more evident than with the recent introduction of the Protecting Investments in Our Ports Act by U.S. Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Gary Peters (D-MI), along with U.S. Representatives Daniel Webster (FL-11) and Salud Carbajal (CA-24) on September 17th, 2024. The Act signifies another critical step toward bolstering the security of America's ports in response to rising concerns about foreign cyber espionage.
